Prayer for Comfort
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
The word that Christ promised us was that he would not leave us as orphans. He would leave us with one that would come after him. He would be comforter and counsellor. We know from reading scripture that, Job warns us of what our days would be. Short and full of trouble. There are challenges to be faced at every turn. Each day brings with it its own troubles. Yet God prepared ahead of us, as a father prepares for the challenges that his children are to face.
1 Peter 5: 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.
In the midst of all these troubles. We can take heart in knowing that his promise is to never leave nor forsake us. Being a God that watches over his word to perform it, we know that we never have to face anyone or anything alone. In Christ, we have an eternal ally. One who sits at the right hand of God and intercedes on our behalf.
Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Hebrews 4:16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
When we pray for comfort, we pray for God to honour his word. We take a check back to God and ask that he would honour it! Do this with boldness! There is nothing more powerful than taking God’s word back to him.
King David understood how significant and perhaps even revolutionary this comforter was. He would have given up anything but his source of comfort.
Psalm 138:3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
The Gift of peace
Psalm 27: 1-3 The LORD is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me,it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear;though war break out against me,even then I will be confident.

Prayer for Comfort in the Bible
You only need to read the book of Psalm to see many prayers for comfort. King David was often faced with the situation in which he needed to be comforted. Psalm 22 is a great example of this. We will break it down verse by verse below.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?
We rest in the truth of the knowledge that God is with us, in keeping with his eternal word. Yet, if we are honest there are seasons in which we have felt alone. Perhaps you are reading this because you are going through such a season.
2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest.
We know that God’s time is best, but there is an inevitable restlessness that may come out of the desperation of waiting. As we are governed by worldly time, there are times that we feel that the Lord hasn’t come on time.
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the one Israel praises.
King David acknowledges that, through all of this, God remains God!
4 In you our ancestors put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
He reminds himself that God is the same God that has shown up for his ancestors. He is the same God that was called upon repeatedly, trusted and delivered. No matter what you are facing, let this same truth rest in you!
5 To you they cried out and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
There is a temptation to begin to feel unworthy. Why would a God who comes through for everyone not come through for me? That is a battle that you should not entertain! The devil desires that you would contort your mind with such.
7 All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him.”
As a person of faith, a believer in Christ, there are expectation. People have things that they want to see of you. You are expected to always have things in check, as the church has made the world mistakenly believe that this is whom we are. A delay or lack of response in the way that you want, or at the time that you desire doesn’t invalidate God.

9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
King David goes on to acknowledge what God has done for him so far. At his mother’s breast, where he would have been at his most helpless. God was found to be trustworthy. From the time he was young, God has walked with him, as he has with you.
11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.
As humans we have one guarantee, we are always a corner away from trouble. Trouble is near, but so is God! When everything and everyone else would turn their back, there is God!
12 Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted within me.
15 My mouthd] is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.
King David lays bare his helplessness before the Lord! He tell him everything as though he knows nothing, yet knowing that God knows everything.
16 Dogs surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they piercee] my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.
This was proven to be prophetic of what would happen down his lineage, in the case of Jesus Christ. Yet, we all know how that story ends.
19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
save me from the horns of the wild oxen.
We accept that we may lose everything and everyone, but not you oh Lord! That was David’s cry!
22 I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or scorned
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.
God is a God of the downtrodden! He is God over us even at our worst! Though we may suffer, he watches over and walks with us through it all. Don’t let your situation shut you up! Don’t let it steal your praise! It will pass.
25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear youf] I will fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
those who seek the Lord will praise him—
may your hearts live forever!
God is faithful to see you through this! He will surely bring a turnaround to you!
27 All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the Lord
and he rules over the nations.
God, your father is still ruler over heaven and earth. He will see you through this situation and more. This is not how this story will end for you. Change is coming! A miracle is coming!
29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!
There is a cause for your victory. Your story, your testimony will inspire someone else to hold on!
